Resistor-divider tolerance

Calculate the nominal output and worst-case voltage range of an unloaded resistor divider.

01 Your inputs

Calculated on your device. Inputs are not transmitted or stored.

02 Your result

Enter your values and select Calculate.

VinR₁R₂Vout
R₁ connects Vin to Vout; R₂ connects Vout to ground. The output is unloaded. Symbolic model; not to scale.

The method

Vout=Vin×R2R1+R2

A worked example

With 5 V, two 10 kΩ resistors, and ±1% tolerance on each, the nominal output is 2.5 V. The corner combinations give 2.475 V minimum and 2.525 V maximum. Divider current is 0.25 mA.

Assumptions & limits

Unloaded DC divider with positive resistances and a fixed, nonnegative input voltage. Tolerances are independent worst-case bounds, not a statistical confidence interval. Load impedance, input-voltage tolerance, temperature coefficients, and self-heating are excluded. Enter resistances in ohms.
